At least 50 people have been killed and hundreds hospitalized after a passenger train derailed and collided with a freight car in India.
According to international media reports, around 500 police officers and 75 ambulances have been dispatched to the accident site in Balasore district of the eastern state of Odisha.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that by accident "Concerned” and affected people "”All possible help” is being done. My sympathies are with the bereaved families in this hour of sorrow.
The Minister of Railways wrote in a message on Twitter that rescue operations are ongoing at the site of the accident and all possible help is being provided to the affected people.
At least 400 people have been injured in the accident, while dozens are buried under the debris, according to the director general of the state’s fire services, Sidhanshu Sarangi.
According to local reports, the Coromandel Express, which runs from Kolkata in the east to Chennai in southern India, derailed and fell onto the opposite track.
