A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook the city East coast of Java, Indonesia’s most populous island, and the tremors were felt as far away as the capital Jakarta. No injuries were reported.

The earthquake occurred off the coast of Tuban in East Java, about 600 kilometers from Jakarta, the meteorological and geophysical agency said in a publication on X (formerly Twitter).

The province is a major industrial area and is home to facilities such as PT Freeport Indonesia’s copper smelter.

According to the United States Geological Survey, which is responsible for tracking global seismic activity, the earthquake struck at 3:52 p.m. local time (8:52 GMT) at a depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles) below the seabed. The epicenter was 111 kilometers north of the city of Paciranwith 15,000 inhabitants.
