A prosecutor in charge of feminicides murdered in Ecuador

He was particularly concerned with feminicides. An Ecuadorian prosecutor was assassinated on Monday in Guayaquil, in the south-west of Ecuador, we learned from official sources. “Prosecutor Edgar Escobar (…) was shot and killed this morning” near his office in the large port on the Pacific coast and economic capital of the country, the prosecution announced on Twitter.

Two suspects were arrested shortly after, the same source said. The victim was a member of the “People and Guarantees Unit” of the public prosecutor’s office, in charge of investigating feminicides and other hate crimes. The motive for his murder is currently unknown.

Unprecedented wave of violence

But it comes as the city of Guayaquil, plagued by drug trafficking, is experiencing an unprecedented wave of violence, in the neighborhoods as well as in its vast prison complex, the scene of several bloody massacres between rival gangs which have killed nearly 400 people since February. 2021.

It is the third magistrate assassinated by bullets in five months in the country. In August, a judge in the Amazon town of Lago Agrio, near the border with Colombia, was murdered. In May, a prosecutor from the fishing port of Manta (southwest) was killed.
