A movement seeks Texas independence from the United States.

A group of citizens leads an initiative aimed at making the state of Texas independent from the United States and turning it into a state.

The movement is known as “Texit” and aims to make this state an independent territory again, as it was about two centuries ago.

The term is the combination of the word “Texas” with “exit,” similar to Brexit, when the United Kingdom left the European Union.

Texas has faced a complex immigration situation at the border with Mexico and its conservative policies, led by Republican Gov. Greg Abbot, have clashed with the decisions of Joe Biden’s administration.

Daniel Miller, president of the Texas Nationalist Movement, asserted that they have never been closer to “independence” than they are now.

“The only way for Texas to secure the border and have a sound immigration system is to do so as an independent nation,” said the representative of this movement founded in 2005.

Texas was part of Mexico in the 19th century, but became independent after a war in 1836 and was a republic until its incorporation into the United States in 1845.

The US Constitution does not provide for this

This movement demands that Parliament pass a law to hold a referendum and ask citizens whether they want to proceed with the proposal.

The experts told Voice of America that this initiative does not have much legal future, since the US Constitution does not provide for the separation of their territory.

“No state has achieved independence. “The Constitution does not specify how to enter or leave the American Union,” said Robert Tapia, a political science professor at Miami-Dade College (MDC).
