A great Alonso is second against Verstappen and the rain

Celebrities, yachts, a procession of cars, rain, chaos, accidents… it was Monaco. Everything happened to all of them and not even with those things changed: Verstappen won in Monte Carlo ahead of a great Alonso and a huge Ocon. Aston Martin threw the Asturian’s remote chances of victory down the drain with two tire changes in two consecutive laps, having not anticipated the rain (or for making a mistake with the chosen compound), and there the opportunity to push Verstappen slipped away, who did with a ‘pit-stop’ what almost all the others solved in two. And Ferrari… it was Ferrari, always looking to see them coming and making bad decisions. They self-eliminated Sainz from the podium with an early stop to consolidate behind the Alpine, not in front. Then Carlos, always aggressive, paid for the aquaplaning when the skies of the Principality opened up. He fell to eighth position on a hard Sunday, because there was rhythm and desire but nothing went well.

At the exit, sun of justice to leave the meteorologists bad. Ocon squeezed Fernando at the start and forced him to take risks on the outside of Santa Devota, touching the walls, but they did not change their positions. The two Spaniards were intelligent: they came out with the hard rubber to extend the first ‘stint’ as long as possible while waiting for those things that usually happen in Monte Carlo. Sainz had a first run-in with Ocon, a slight touch that damaged his wing but did not stop him from continuing on the track and being faster than the Alpine. The pressure was enormous. No one went past that, you can’t get ahead of it hereAnd the one who dares to do it, like Magnussen or Stroll, finishes last (Haas) or doesn’t finish (Lance).

Esteban stopped first with a slow tire change of four seconds. Ferrari saw it, someone came up and sent Carlos to the ‘pit-lane’ immediately after. It was impossible for an ‘overcut’ to materialize in one lap, when he was two seconds behind the Norman. But just as the Monaco GP cannot be understood without yachts, it would not be the same without Ferrari’s lamentable strategies. So Sainz tied fourth place “to cover himself from Hamilton”, they told him on the radio. “But what do I care about Hamilton?” he protested.

Rain and mistakes in Monte Carlo

Before the last third of the race it started to rain. First timidly, in the Monte Carlo area. Then a lot, a lot. There was no movement between Loews and the tunnel. Alpine saw it quickly, Ocon stopped the first for the intermediate and thus assured, definitively, Alpine’s first podium since Qatar 2021, then with Fernando in the car. Ferrari did not understand it that way, until Sainz hit a skid that made him lose positions and fall to eighth place. Mercedes fished in troubled rivers, literally, to put Hamilton and Russell just ahead of Leclerc, Gasly and Carlos. Ironically, Ferrari virtually lost the podium for defending against Lewis and the two Maranello cars finished well outside the top-3 and behind the two Mercedes.

In front of, Aston Martin made a mistake that possibly did not affect the final result, but it did prevent a duel between Verstappen and Alonso on the slippery asphalt of Monaco. Fernando stopped first (lap 55) to put on the medium tire when others were already trying the rain tires. One lap later, both Max and the Spaniard were heading to the pit road to set up intermediate. With the double maneuver, Alonso gave away about 24 seconds. He would easily have started in front of the Dutchman if he had put the green Pirelli first. Another thing is that he would have maintained the position over a Max in a state of grace with a Red Bull that has no rivals on this grid. Only Verstappen won, he celebrated with rage. After a while Alonso arrived, second, his best result of the season with good points for the World Cup (Pérez was 16th, Fernando remains at 12 points). Could be better. It could be the 33rd. But it’s not bad at all.
