Washington: The racist insults against Vinicius Jr. are appalling

The United States described on Wednesday as “appalling” the racist insults hurled at Brazilian striker Vinicius, of Real Madrid, during a match in Valencia for the Spanish league.

“I saw the screams directed at Vinicius Jr. They were obviously terrifying”said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller. “I know that the Spanish authorities have taken action against this.”

“We condemn racism anywhere in the world wherever it occurs, including in sport, and we appreciate efforts to combat it,” the spokesperson added.

The Real Madrid striker, 22, was subjected to all kinds of insults on Sunday, including racistduring his team’s 1-0 defeat against Valencia.

Vini has garnered global support after standing up against the racist insults thrown at him by Velancia fans at the Mestalla stadium.

These incidents have inflamed Spainwhere proven cases of racism have been increasing for several decades in stadiums.
