Alvaro Farfán, head of the fire department in the Cundinamarca region in the central part of the country, said the explosion occurred on Wednesday night at a coal mine located in the town of Cucunuba, about 90 kilometers north of the Colombian capital Bogota.

The authorities said that they suspect that the explosion may have occurred from gas accumulation in the mine.

Alvaro Farfan said three bodies were found early Thursday after the explosion. At that time, the four workers could not be found. The four bodies were found later on Friday.
