19 people were flogged for proven crimes, Afghan Taliban confirmed

Three women and 11 men were flogged on Wednesday on the orders of a court in Afghanistan.

According to Afghan authorities, the men were found guilty of theft and ‘moral crimes’ and were sentenced to flogging by the court.

Kazi Rafiullah Samim, head of information and culture for the Taliban government in Logar province, told AFP that the floggings were not public and that no individual was given a maximum of 39 lashes.

It should be noted that the supreme leader of the Taliban this month ordered the judges to fully implement the Islamic law or Sharia. After that, flogging punishments have been confirmed for the first time. The supreme leader of the Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada, ordered the judges this month to fully implement the punishments specified in the Islamic law.

According to the Taliban spokesman, he said that the files of thieves, kidnappers and rebels should be carefully reviewed and those files in which all the Shari’a conditions of punishment and retribution have been fulfilled, it is obligatory for you to follow them.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of the Taliban reported on Monday that 19 people have been publicly flogged this month in Takhar province in the northeast of Afghanistan. Supreme Court spokesperson Maulvi Inayatullah said that after thorough consideration and strict Shariah investigation, each of them was sentenced to 39 lashes.

According to the spokesman, these punishments were carried out in northeastern Takhar province on November 11 on the orders of provincial courts after Friday prayers, but he did not say for what crimes these people were sentenced to flogging.
