YouTube Age-Restricts Graphic Video Game Violence for Under 18s

YouTube will begin restricting access to certain depictions of realistic violence in video games for users under 18 and those not logged into their accounts, signaling a stricter approach to content moderation.

The new policy specifically targets scenes featuring human-like characters engaged in significant violence against non-combatants or acts of torture. This aims to limit exposure to content deemed “terrifyingly realistic.”

Conversely, animated or cartoonish combat scenarios are generally not subject to these new restrictions. The focus remains on violence that mimics real-world harm.

Content depicting animal abuse or suffering that goes beyond traditional game practices will also face restrictions. This includes scenes explicitly designed to shock or disgust viewers.

YouTube’s review criteria for such content will consider the length of the violent scene. It will also assess whether violence is the primary focus or if specific acts are zoomed in for emphasis.

While no specific game titles have been explicitly named, the policy could impact highly violent games. This includes popular franchises like Grand Theft Auto or controversial missions found in Call of Duty.

A spokesperson for the platform suggested creators can avoid age restrictions. They recommended adjusting gameplay to sidestep triggering scenes or opting to blur and censor violent segments before uploading.
