World No. 1 Alcaraz Stunned in Paris Masters Opener, Ranking at Risk

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz’s top ranking is now vulnerable after his unexpected opening-round defeat at the Paris Masters 1000, ending a significant winning streak at this level. The 22-year-old Spanish tennis star lost to Britain’s Cameron Norrie, ranked 31st globally. Norrie won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 23 minutes.

This loss concludes Alcaraz’s impressive run of 17 consecutive victories in Masters 1000 tournaments this year, a streak that included titles in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Cincinnati.

His position as the world’s top-ranked player is now at risk. Italian Jannik Sinner could surpass Alcaraz if Sinner secures the Paris title.

Alcaraz committed 54 unforced errors during the match, a factor in his early exit. This marks the first time since March, when he fell in the second round of the Miami Masters 1000, that Alcaraz has not reached a tournament final.

The Paris Masters has historically presented challenges for Alcaraz, who achieved his best result there in 2022 by reaching the quarterfinals. This year’s tournament features slower court conditions.

For Norrie, the victory was his first against a world No. 1 opponent. He will advance to the round of 16, where he is scheduled to face the winner of the match between Arthur Rinderknech, ranked 29th, and Valentin Vacherot, ranked 40th.
