Wildwood Trust euthanises entire wolf pack after violent social collapse leaves three critically injured

A complete and violent collapse of a captive social hierarchy forced a UK wildlife park to take extreme measures. The Wildwood Trust in Kent euthanised its entire pack of five European grey wolves on Thursday morning after rapid infighting left multiple animals with life-threatening injuries.

Park management confirmed the decision was an absolute last resort. Staff and veterinarians were physically unable to safely intervene or provide medical care to the injured wolves due to the extreme aggression within the enclosure, presenting an unacceptable ongoing risk to animal welfare.

The euthanasia of all five wolves occurred on March 26. Prior to the intervention, three of the wolves had sustained severe injuries from the sudden breakdown in pack dynamics.

The mass euthanasia of captive wolf packs due to social collapse has historical precedent in the world of UK wildlife management. In March 2023, the Camperdown Wildlife Centre in Dundee, Scotland, euthanised four wolves after the death of their alpha male, Loki. That loss caused the remaining pack to exhibit highly anxious and abnormal behavior.

A similar structural collapse occurred in 2006 at the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie, Scotland. Management there put down a pack after the animals ceased displaying normal behavior following a sudden shift in their internal pecking order.

Major outlets including The Independent and the Daily Mirror are currently reporting the Wildwood Trust incident.
