The certification, reports “The Verge,” guarantees the interoperability of Wi-Fi 7 devices. This year, new technical products such as telephones, laptops and routers will be equipped with the new standard. That could mean a huge gain in speed and efficiency compared to Wi-Fi 6E, the magazine said.
The best wireless routers with Wi-Fi 6 in comparison
Streaming and internet gaming at a new level
The alliance said Wi-Fi 7 will be better than existing standards for things like high-bandwidth streaming and low-latency wireless gaming. This is important given that virtual reality is gaining popularity and people will continue to communicate with colleagues at home, for example via Zoom. Kevin Robinson, CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance, told The Verge that Wi-Fi 7 is “the first generation designed from the ground up for the 6 GHz band.” So in the faster, wider range of the wireless spectrum that was first used by Wi-Fi 6E devices.
Certificate brings security when working with other devices
There are already Wi-Fi 7 devices such as routers from Netgear and others on the market. However, these are not yet certified. They can, but do not necessarily have to, work easily with other devices according to this standard. The alliance wants to guarantee this. “The Verge” summarizes the key features of Wi-Fi 7: It offers twice the channel bandwidth – from 160 MHz to 320 MHz – compared to the fastest devices with the Wi-Fi 5, 6 or 6E standards. This means potential for wireless downloads of over two gigabits per second.
Bundling provides more speed and stability
There will also be Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for the first time, which is essentially wireless link aggregation: These are bundled connections that operate over two or three of the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6GHz bands are distributed, resulting in greater speed and stability. Because leaving the range of one band no longer means having to reconnect to reach another, according to “The Verge”.
Other advantages of the new certified standard can also be listed, and even cheaper routers with Wi-Fi 7 will show better connection results than current top devices based on Wi-Fi 6 because they can always bundle at least two channels instead of just one, even in more expensive models three.
There are also other details that, according to the alliance, should ensure greater efficiency, throughput and stability. Additionally, Wi-Fi 7 devices will be backwards compatible with previous Wi-Fi versions. Older devices will not be able to directly benefit from the new functions of a Wi-Fi 7 router. But new laptops and phones should soon take advantage of the benefits automatically. Even now, if you buy a new router, it could be wise to purchase it according to the Wi-Fi 7 standard because this means you are on the safe side for current future developments.
