White House East Wing Razed for Trump’s $300M Ballroom

Satellite imagery has confirmed the complete demolition of the White House’s 123-year-old East Wing, clearing the way for a new, privately funded grand ballroom, a project that has drawn criticism from historical preservation groups.

Photos released by Planet Labs PBC on October 24, 2025, show the entire East Wing structure removed. The area is now covered in debris, marking the initial phase of a major reconstruction effort.

This demolition paves the way for a 1,000-seat grand ballroom, a project championed by former President Donald Trump. The estimated cost for the new facility is $300 million.

The White House has stated that funding for the project will be sourced entirely from private donors. Contributions are expected from major technology companies including Apple, Google, Meta, and Amazon, as well as defense contractor Lockheed Martin.

Former President Trump himself is also contributing to the project. Officials emphasize that no taxpayer money will be used for the construction.

The project has triggered significant concern among various historical preservation organizations. They lament the loss of the 123-year-old East Wing.

The wing held significant historical importance. It served as the workspace for the First Lady and was the primary entrance for official White House visitors.

Originally, Mr. Trump had indicated the construction would not impact the existing structure. However, consultations with architects ultimately led to the decision to proceed with a full demolition.

Despite the preservation concerns, tourists visiting Washington D.C. have largely supported the new ballroom. Many view it as a necessary upgrade to accommodate international delegates and large state functions.
