WhatsApp Tests AI-Powered Writing Assistant for Private Messages

Imagine writing a message on WhatsApp and having a private AI assistant help you refine it. The app is testing a feature that uses AI to suggest better ways to express yourself, all while keeping your messages private. This new tool, called Writing Help, is part of the WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.19.8.

Recently, WhatsApp introduced a feature that privately summarizes unread messages, making it easier to catch up on group conversations. Now, the focus is on helping users write better messages. The new feature uses Meta’s AI and a technology called Private Processing to improve the way messages are written, without compromising user privacy.

The system ensures that all message improvements happen directly on the user’s device, without sending any data to Meta, WhatsApp, or third parties. This means your messages remain private and secure. The AI assistant can help users rewrite messages in different tones, such as professional, funny, supportive, or clear and corrected.

Each tone option offers up to three suggestions for users to choose from. Users can select the one that best fits their style or stick with the original message. The Private Processing system uses encrypted connections and anonymous routing to ensure that no message leaves the user’s phone. Even if users provide feedback on the Writing Help feature, WhatsApp won’t have access to the message itself, only the user’s opinion on the AI suggestion.

The Writing Help feature is optional, and WhatsApp won’t automatically change users’ messages. Those who don’t want to use the feature can simply ignore the button or disable it in settings. The feature is still in beta and will be released in a future update. When it launches, it promises to make messages more expressive, precise, and fun, without sacrificing privacy.
