Luis Guzmán, the actor known for his role in Wednesday, recently opened up about a past co-star. He didn’t hold back when describing Jennifer Lopez. The veteran actor, 69, appeared on Hot Ones Versus on August 27th. He was with his Wednesday co-stars Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, and Georgie Farmer. They ate spicy chicken wings during a round-table interview. During the show, he had to describe former collaborators in just one word.
Myers, 23, explained the game to Guzmán. She listed famous Hollywood names for him to quickly describe. Guzmán called Adam Sandler "incredible." He described Catherine Zeta-Jones, his on-screen wife in Wednesday, as "bellissima." That word means "most beautiful" in Italian.
But then Myers mentioned Jennifer Lopez, 56. Guzmán’s answer was simple: "bien." This Spanish word means "good" or "okay." His younger co-stars were clearly surprised. Myers and Ortega, 22, let out a chuckle. Sunday, 30, wide-eyed, seemed a little stunned by the response.
Guzmán also had a sweet moment with his current on-screen daughter. He called Jenna Ortega, 22, a "prodigy." Ortega, sitting beside him, quickly replied, "Aw, I love you." Guzmán returned the sentiment, saying "I love you" back to her.
Guzmán and Lopez first worked together in the 1998 crime film Out of Sight. Steven Soderbergh directed the movie. It also starred George Clooney, Ving Rhames, and Don Cheadle. Lopez played Federal Marshal Karen Sisco in the film. She gets kidnapped by bank robber Jack Foley, played by Clooney. Foley had just escaped from prison. Their relationship starts as rivals. But soon, the two characters develop feelings for each other.
The movie marked a big turning point for Lopez’s career. Many believe it helped launch her into major film roles. Janet Maslin, a critic for The New York Times, praised her acting. She wrote that Lopez delivered her best movie role to date. Maslin noted Lopez brought both charm and courage to the character. "If it was hard to imagine a sensual, armed worker reading the script, here it proves evident," Maslin wrote.
Lopez reflected on the movie’s lasting appeal in 2018. She spoke about it during an interview with GQ. "It became sort of a cult classic," she said. Lopez mentioned it didn’t get much attention when first released. But years later, many people tell her it’s their favorite film. She called this turnaround "crazy." So, while Out of Sight was a pivotal moment for J.Lo, Guzmán’s one-word review was just "good." Perhaps it’s just a seasoned actor’s way of keeping things refreshingly real.
