War in Ukraine: around 10,000 Ukrainian refugees left France to return to their country

This is the first estimate, almost eight months after the start of the war in Ukraine. The state estimates that around 10,000 displaced Ukrainians had returned to their country at the end of September, after being received in France, the head of the French Office for Immigration and integration (Ofii), Didier Leschi.

This figure was establishedaccording to deactivated asylum seeker allowance cards”, explains the director general of the Ofii. To cross-check the data related to this allowance, offered to Ukrainian refugees even if they are not strictly speaking asylum seekers, the authorities also observed “a loss in temporary protection renewals”the unprecedented regime granted by the Europeans to these displaced persons and renewable every six months.

“Others are back and forth”

“This corresponds to what we have seen since the beginning of this crisis, namely that some of the displaced Ukrainians arrive with the objective of returning to their country as soon as possible, while others are going back and forth. between France and Ukraine”said Didier Leschi.

This movement of departure also coincides with a marked slowdown in arrivals, “180 on average” over the last few days, which is also reflected in a drop in Ukrainian pupils attending school in France. They were nearly 19,000 at the end of June, against 18,500 at the end of September, according to Ofii.

About “107,000” Displaced Ukrainians are still covered by the allowance for asylum seekers issued by the Ofii, specifies Didier Leschi. The latter estimates the aid paid to Ukrainians since the war at 27 million euros per month.
