Vuelta a Extremadura Grows International Reach with Cross-Border Stage

The Vuelta Ciclista a Extremadura is gearing up for an exciting return this year, with a twist that’s sure to generate plenty of buzz – a transborder stage in the men’s category that will kick off from Elvas. This innovation is a testament to the Junta de Extremadura’s commitment to promoting equality in sports, coinciding with the final stage of the women’s event on International Women’s Day. As the premier cycling event in the region, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.

The women’s event will get underway on March 6th in Mérida, wrapping up on March 8th, while the men’s category will commence on March 14th and conclude on March 16th in Los Santos de Maimona. The women’s competition will feature a varied terrain, including medium mountain, flat, mountain, and individual time trial stages, covering a total distance of 318.6 kilometers and accumulating over 4,140 meters in elevation. Top-notch teams like Lidl-Trek, UAE Team Emirates, Team Visma-Lease a Bike, Uno-X Mobility Cycling AS, and Movistar will be vying for the top spot.

Etapas de la Vuelta a Extremadura Femenina

The women’s event will be divided into three stages:

  1. March 6th | Stage 1: Mérida-Mérida (first sector), 9 km CRI, followed by Mérida-Cáceres (second sector), 90.4 km
  2. March 7th | Stage 2: Quintana de la Serena – Valdefuentes (109.2 km)
  3. March 8th | Stage 3: Malpartida de Plasencia – Hervás (110 km)

The men’s category, meanwhile, will take place from March 14th to 16th, starting in the Portuguese city of Elvas. This transborder stage is a first for the event and is expected to add an extra layer of excitement to the competition. The men’s event will cover a total distance of 456.6 kilometers, passing through both provinces of Extremadura. Teams like Finisher, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Supermercados Froiz, Aluminios Cortizo, and the local Extremadura-Pebetero team will be competing.

The men’s event will consist of three stages:

  1. March 14th | Stage 1: Elvas – Badajoz (146.3 km)
  2. March 15th | Stage 2: Alcántara – Perales del Puerto (156.4 km)
  3. March 16th | Stage 3: Finca El Toril / Carrascalejo – Los Santos de Maimona (153.9 km)

The 2025 Vuelta a Extremadura will cover a total distance of 775.2 kilometers, passing through 60 localities in the region. The men’s event will have an international start, setting off from Elvas, Portugal, making it a truly transborder competition. This innovative move is expected to boost the profile of cycling in Extremadura, while also fostering collaboration between the two countries.

In addition to the main event, the Vuelta a Extremadura will feature a range of parallel activities designed to energize the local community. This year’s edition will see the launch of the “La Cultura está de Vuelta” initiative, aimed at promoting emerging talent from the region and contributing to the local economy.

The Vuelta Ciclista a Extremadura’s caravan will comprise around 400 people, ensuring a fun and festive atmosphere throughout the event. In terms of safety, the competition will be coordinated by the Guardia Civil de Tráfico, with support from Protección Civil, 112 de Extremadura, Policía Local, and volunteers from each of the participating localities. With its unique blend of exciting racing, stunning scenery, and community-focused activities, the Vuelta a Extremadura is an event not to be missed.
