Imagine waking up to an unexpected gift from your government. That’s the feeling many in Vietnam experienced recently, as the nation prepares for its biggest holiday. On August 29, 2025, officials announced a special handout for every citizen.
In a move that surprised many, the Vietnamese government will give 100,000 dong to each person. This amount is roughly equivalent to four U.S. dollars. The payout is specifically to celebrate National Day, which falls on September 2nd. Officials described this program as a clear sign of the deep care and concern the country’s leadership holds for its people.
While the individual sum might seem small, the total cost for the government is quite large. This initiative is expected to reach an estimated $380 million. To make sure everyone receives their gift in time for the celebration, the central bank and finance ministry have been told to complete all payments before National Day. Citizens have the option to get the money directly in their bank accounts or pick it up as cash.
Pham Tien Luat, a resident of Hanoi, shared his initial disbelief. “I was really surprised,” he said, admitting he first thought it might be fake news. The amount quickly became a talking point, with many joking it would be enough for about three cups of coffee. This makes sense when considering the average monthly wage in 2024 was around 7.7 million dong, or roughly $300. So, while it’s a pleasant surprise, it’s not a major boost to household incomes. Still, this unexpected cash injection offers a small moment of collective celebration. It gives a little extra spending money for a national holiday that holds deep meaning for the country.
