Vieira’s Candidacy Alleges Statutory Breaches, Favoritism by Rui Costa in Benfica Election.

Luís Filipe Vieira is running for Benfica president after leaving the position in 2021

A major club election is usually a time for excitement, but the air around the upcoming vote is thick with tension. The campaign for Luís Filipe Vieira has just fired off a serious warning. They claim “violations of the statutes” and “favoritism” for Rui Costa’s campaign are putting the whole election at risk. Vieira’s team suggests that Rui Costa’s board is acting like the General Assembly Table (MAG) itself. They say the board is picking the company to certify the election, which creates a huge problem.

Vieira’s campaign recently attended a meeting called by the MAG. There, they saw many things they believe go against the club’s rules. They spoke about unfair advantages being given to Rui Costa’s side. This is not just about small details; it touches on the very core of how the election will be run.

One of the big issues raised involves the President of the General Assembly Table (PMAG). He is supposed to be in charge of the election and stay neutral. But he didn’t say no when asked if he might join Rui Costa’s board if Costa wins. Vieira’s team says if this is true, the PMAG should step down right away. They also found it strange that Rui Costa’s campaign wasn’t even at the meeting. This absence made them suspect a special connection between the MAG and Costa’s group.

The current board, led by Rui Costa, is setting up the entire election process. This is a crucial detail. This includes choosing the company that will make sure everything runs smoothly. That company will handle both regular paper votes and the new electronic voting system. With Rui Costa himself running again for president, this gives his board incredible power. They get to decide who is on the voter list. They also pick how the electronic voting data is set up and encrypted. Even the voting locations and how information reaches other campaigns are in their hands.

Vieira’s campaign worries about fairness. They point out that other candidates don’t have guaranteed access to the details of the contract with the certifying company. There’s also no clear path for them to see how the voting operations will work. These operations will ultimately decide who wins. Instead of a balanced election commission, the MAG decided to hire an outside company. This company remains unnamed and was chosen by the current board, not by a neutral body.

The rules for the election are another point of contention. The current board hasn’t shown much interest in discussing or changing the Electoral Regulation. Vieira’s campaign, under the banner “Voltar a Ganhar” (Return to Winning), even put forward an alternative plan. However, the MAG believes only the board can propose election rules. They also feel these rules cannot be changed during the big General Assembly meeting.

Adding to the worries, there’s a lack of clear information about how the electronic votes will be processed. The MAG also turned down the idea of voting by mail. These two decisions could stop thousands of club members from being able to vote. It risks their basic right to take part in choosing the club’s future.

Vieira’s campaign believes these problems threaten the honesty and fairness of the most important event for the club. For now, they want to focus on talking things out and on the General Assembly set for the 27th. They hope to show how unhappy, shocked, and even disbelieving they are. Their goal is to ensure the discussion leads to an election that treats all candidates equally.
