Vieira: Late Campaign Start Altered Election Outcome

Luís Filipe Vieira, former president of Portuguese football club Benfica, has conceded defeat in the club’s recent elections, suggesting a delayed campaign start contributed to his third-place finish.

In a message to supporters, Vieira accepted the outcome, indicating that an earlier declaration of his candidacy could have altered the results. He revealed his campaign concluded in third place.

Vieira emphasized his deep pride in the collective efforts of his team and supporters. He now urges unity among Benfica fans, stating he will always be “available to help our club.”

“It’s a pity we started late, as the outcome could have been different,” Vieira stated in his message. He reiterated his belief that a more timely launch would have yielded a different outcome for the elections.

His campaign team traversed more than 9,000 kilometers across Portugal in just 45 days. They connected with “thousands and thousands” of Benfica supporters, addressing their concerns and sharing their vision for the club’s future.

Vieira highlighted the creation of “the most solid and detailed project,” spearheaded by a “new, young and dedicated team.” He described their campaign as one executed with “soul, sacrifice and passion.”

At 76 years old, Vieira noted his 20 years of service to Sport Lisboa e Benfica. He affirmed he had given “everything” to the club, consistently standing firm during its most challenging times.

He expressed honor and pride in his lengthy tenure, underscoring his enduring connection to Benfica’s history and future. He extended heartfelt gratitude to his supporters for their dedication, loyalty, and friendship.

Vieira also proudly stated that they participated in “the largest election ever for a sports club in the world.”

He pledged continued availability to assist the club under any circumstances, driven by the same spirit of dedication and love. He asserted he would always defend the club.
