Vasco Matos: Santa Clara “Proud” of Players Despite Gil Vicente Loss

Santa Clara coach Vasco Matos expressed satisfaction with his team’s evolving performance and tactical adjustments, even after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Gil Vicente, signaling an optimistic outlook for the season.

Matos stated the team showed “great response” and commitment following internal discussions, despite the outcome. He indicated happiness with the team’s process and a new playing style, which he described as different from previous approaches.

He specifically praised his players for their effort in “pushing Gil Vicente back,” calling it a “merit” that fosters pride and belief within the squad. This dedication, Matos noted, fuels confidence for future challenges.

The coach confirmed that recent tactical changes are deliberate, aimed at creating discomfort for both internal expectations and external opponents. He acknowledged the challenge of converting opportunities, even with a strong defensive line.

Matos highlighted that the team includes players who participated in a regional league in the Azores last year. He recognized the inherent risks but maintained a confident stance regarding the team’s future prospects.

Despite the positive assessment, Matos conceded that improvements are necessary, particularly in the “final third” of the field, emphasizing the need to “materialize” more of their ball possession. He noted that players are aware of these areas for development.

Regarding the absence of Gabriel Silva, Matos stated it was a coaching decision. He emphasized his focus on players who are “100%” committed to the team’s efforts on the field.

Looking ahead, the coach acknowledged a difficult upcoming match against Sporting, describing them as “a great team.” However, Matos affirmed his squad’s determination, stating, “No one here will bow their head.”
