Vasco Botelho da Costa: Moreirense Must Be ‘Solid in Our Identity’ for Arouca Match

Moreirense coach Vasco Botelho da Costa has stressed mental fortitude and tactical flexibility as key components for his team’s upcoming Primeira Liga match against Arouca.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, da Costa emphasized the importance of maintaining the “attitude, concentration, and focus” his players displayed in their previous outing against FC Porto. He noted this mindset was crucial, particularly after conceding a late goal in the first half of that match.

The coach described Arouca as a “very well-coached team” and a “very strong” opponent. He highlighted the need for Moreirense to remain “very solid in our identity and process” given the difficulty in predicting Arouca’s exact tactical approach.

Da Costa acknowledged fewer training days for preparation but stated that their approach would not “change much.” He said his team must understand how to “play the game we like to play” and exploit clear advantages against their opponent.

The upcoming match is expected to be “very demanding defensively.” Da Costa noted Arouca’s “great variety in build-up play,” requiring Moreirense to be strategically alert and well-prepared.

The coach confirmed his role involves identifying and isolating “certain situations that are costing us points.” He referenced a “clear error” that contributed to the defeat against FC Porto.

Addressing perceived squad limitations, da Costa dismissed them as a problem. He stated his function is to “find solutions” and reminded reporters that the squad was built to handle “worst-case scenarios.”

In a personnel announcement, da Costa confirmed André Ferreira will start in goal for the match. He praised the team’s three goalkeepers for their exceptional work.

The 10th-round Liga Portugal match is scheduled for Sunday at 6 PM local time.
