Utah prosecutors are moving to seek the death penalty for Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This serious decision comes as new evidence has surfaced. It includes chilling chat messages. These messages reportedly show Robinson confessing to a close friend.

The Utah County Attorney’s Office has charged Robinson with seven serious crimes. One of these is premeditated murder. This charge carries the possibility of a death sentence. Robinson stands accused of killing Charlie Kirk, a well-known figure in conservative politics.

Investigators say Robinson shot Kirk with a rifle from a rooftop. The bullet hit Kirk in the neck. Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University at the time. Video of the incident spread quickly online.

Court documents reveal more details about the case. Prosecutors say that soon after the shooting, Robinson messaged his roommate. He told the roommate to check under a keyboard. There, a handwritten letter was found. It read, “I had a chance to get rid of Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to do it.”

When the roommate asked Robinson if he was the shooter, Robinson replied, “Yes, it was me. Sorry.” In later messages, Robinson admitted he had planned the attack for over a week. He also regretted leaving his grandfather’s rifle in some bushes. He feared his father would be angry.

Authorities later found Robinson’s DNA on the trigger of the rifle used in the shooting. Robinson’s mother spoke with police. She told them her son’s political views had shifted sharply left over the past year. He had become a strong supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. This created deep disagreements with his conservative father.

This case has caught national attention across the United States. Former President Donald Trump even called for the death penalty. However, prosecutors state their decision to pursue the highest penalty is based solely on the facts and circumstances of the case. They say external calls do not influence their process.

During his first court appearance last Tuesday, Robinson learned about the charges. The judge also informed him that he could face the death penalty. Robinson told the court he could not afford a lawyer. The court will provide legal representation for him. His next hearing is set for September 29.
