The US Department of Health and Human Services is restructuring. It plans to cut 10,000 more jobs. This comes after 10,000 employees already left voluntarily. The department wants to reduce costs and change its organization.
What’s changing
The department will go from 28 divisions to 15. A new division, the Administration for a Healthy America, will focus on managing health care. The department will also reduce its regional offices from 10 to 5. These changes will save $1.8 billion each year.
The department’s main goal is to stop chronic diseases. It wants to focus on safety, healthy food, clean water, and reducing harmful substances. “We’re not just cutting jobs, we’re restructuring with a focus on our mission,” said Robert F. Kennedy, the Health Secretary. “We’ll do more with less, using less taxpayer money.”
What’s staying the same
Important health programs like Medicare and Medicaid won’t be affected. The restructuring also won’t impact food and drug inspectors or medical device regulators.
The job cuts will affect full-time employees in different offices, including the FDA, CDC, and National Institutes of Health. The changes are part of a larger effort to make the department more efficient and effective.
