In a development that has sent shockwaves through the community, Judge Emilio Baccelli of the 31st penal court has imposed restrictive measures on the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Luciano Chineppe in the La Paloma neighborhood of Montevideo. The young man, who had no prior criminal record, lost his life on the night of January 12th, and the incident has sparked a rigorous investigation by the prosecutor’s office.
The
occurred around 9 pm in the area of Camino Alianza and Miguel Javier Arigu, where neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, prompting the police to respond to the alert generated by the Shotspotter system, which detects gunfire from a distance. Upon arrival, a unit from the Metropolitan Police Response Unit (URPM) searched for the victim but found only bloodstains in the patio of a residence, with no sign of the individual who had been shot.
However, minutes later, the police received word that a young man with gunshot wounds to the head and legs had been taken to the Hospital del Cerro in a private vehicle. The victim, sadly, succumbed to his injuries after 10 pm. According to police accounts from the hospital, there were incidents involving the deceased’s family and friends.
As the police investigation unfolded, it became clear that the victim had been intercepted by two individuals as he approached his home, and without exchanging any words, they opened fire, striking him multiple times before fleeing the scene, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior. The meticulous work of the police, including intelligence gathering, witness interviews, and analysis of CCTV footage, ultimately led to the identification of the shooter and the vehicle used in the crime.
The breakthrough came when investigators tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a location in Carrasco, where it was parked on the rambla República de México and Puntas de Santiago. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and brought to justice, with the court imposing restrictive measures as the investigation by the prosecutor’s office continues.
What’s particularly striking about this case is that Luciano Chineppe was related to other individuals who were also murdered in the same neighborhood in 2017 and 2018, all of whom shared the Chineppe surname. This tragic event has raised concerns about the ongoing violence in the area and the need for continued efforts to address the root causes of such crimes.
