US and Iran Hold First Round of Nuclear Talks in Oman.

The US and Iran have taken a significant step towards reviving a nuclear deal.

Indirect Talks

The two countries held their first high-level talks in years,
with representatives meeting in Oman on April 12, 2025.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, said his country wants a fair deal.
The talks were indirect, with the two sides in separate rooms and
Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, acting as a mediator.

Araqchi said the discussions lasted about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
The two sides agreed to meet again next week.
The US has been trying to curb Iran’s nuclear program for years,
imposing sanctions to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons.
In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from
a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers,
reimposing sanctions that have hurt Iran’s economy.

Nuclear Deal

The original deal, struck in 2015, limited Iran’s nuclear program
in exchange for some sanctions relief.
Analysts believe Iran may be willing to limit its nuclear program,
but not abandon it entirely, in exchange for easing sanctions.
This could be a key point of negotiation in the upcoming talks.

Trump recently sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader,
saying he wants a deal to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons
and facing air strikes from the US and Israel.
The next round of talks may not be held in Oman,
but Oman will continue to act as a mediator.
The outcome of these talks remains uncertain,
but they mark an important step towards a potential agreement.
