Uruguay Hospital Strike Demands Better Security After Shooting Incident

Violence Hits Hospital, Staff Demand Better Security

A 24-hour strike by hospital staff in Durazno ended Wednesday at 6 pm. The walkout was sparked by a violent incident where a gunman entered the hospital and shot a young patient. Martín Pereira, president of the Public Health Workers’ Federation, said staff are on edge. “Violence keeps happening, and now we’ve had a major incident – a shooting in a hospital room. It’s a place where people go to heal, but now we’re seeing situations that make us think twice.”

Security Concerns

Staff want better security measures and are calling on the Ministry of Interior to help control access to hospitals. Pereira noted that hospitals in the interior have fewer physical security controls. The Medical Federation of the Interior (FEMI) expressed concern and solidarity with hospital staff and patients. “This violent act not only endangers those seeking medical attention but also affects the health teams working in increasingly challenging conditions,” said FEMI.

Calls for Action

FEMI backed the 24-hour strike and urged national, departmental, and municipal authorities to take concrete measures to stop the wave of violence. They want to protect health workers and ensure hospitals are safe spaces for everyone. The incident has highlighted the need for better security in hospitals, particularly in rural areas. Staff and patients deserve a safe environment, and it’s up to authorities to make that happen.
