Uruguay Alone in Mercosur to Vote for Russia’s Withdrawal from Ukraine

Uruguay was the only Mercosur country that voted for Russia to end the war in Ukraine

The United Nations General Assembly convened in New York on Monday to address the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, now in its third year. A key motion was proposed, calling for a vote on a text that demands Vladimir Putin’s government to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory. This text reaffirms the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and explicitly requests the immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces.

The resolution garnered 93 votes in favor, with 18 against and 65 abstentions. Notably, Uruguay was among the countries that voted in favor, standing out as the only Mercosur country to do so. In contrast, Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay chose not to support the text, opting to abstain from the vote instead.

This development marks a significant shift in Argentina’s stance, given that its president, Javier Milei, had previously shown support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, this change in position coincides with a notable alteration in the attitude of the US towards the conflict. US President Donald Trump recently criticized Zelenskyy, labeling him a dictator, and the United States was among the 18 countries that voted against the resolution. This sequence of events raises important questions about the evolving international dynamics surrounding the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
