Underdog Coach After Cup Loss: ‘Happy and Sad’

André Irulegui, coach of lower-division side GD Bragança, described his team’s narrow 1-0 defeat to top-tier Sporting Braga in the Portuguese Cup as a “bittersweet” experience, praising his players’ valiant effort despite the elimination. The third-round match saw Bragança, a club from Portugal’s Campeonato de Portugal, hold their more decorated opponents to a single goal.

Irulegui emphasized that while the result itself was the “only negative,” the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive for his squad. He expressed pride in his players for overcoming significant difficulties and rising to the occasion of such a high-profile fixture.

The team’s strategy was to delay Braga’s scoring, play with a different defensive structure, and prevent the top-division club’s typical attacking triangulations. Irulegui acknowledged Braga’s superior power but noted that his team successfully pushed the game to a point where the opposition might have felt growing anxiety.

“My team, with all the difficulties we face, made it tough for them,” Irulegui stated, calling the moment “antagonistic, happy and sad.” He was particularly pleased that his players proved their capabilities on a larger stage, despite the ultimate loss.

The Taça de Portugal, Portugal’s national cup competition, is known for creating such matchups, offering lower-tier clubs a chance to test themselves against elite opponents. Irulegui highlighted that these knockout games allow smaller teams to “put everything on the line.”

He added that his players learned important lessons, realizing that their high-profile opponents are “not extraterrestrials” but human beings operating in a better context. The coach concluded by expressing gratitude for the team’s effort, the city, and the club, stating that Bragança would now return to its own league challenges after “going to the moon and coming back to planet Earth.”
