UN Declares Gaza Famine: Half Million Starve, Children Most Vulnerable Amid Israeli Denial

UN ประกาศ “กาซาเข้าสู่ภาวะทุพภิกขภัย” ประชาชนครึ่งล้านเผชิญความอดอยาก เด็กคือผู้รับกรรมหนักสุด

On August 22, 2025, a grim shadow fell over the world as the United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza. This isn’t just a warning; it’s a devastating reality. Reports confirm two people have already died from starvation within the last 24 hours, painting a stark picture of the crisis. Health officials in Gaza also reported 71 more deaths from Israeli attacks across the strip.

The situation is dire for an immense number of people. A UN-backed group, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), estimates that over 500,000 individuals in Gaza are currently facing starvation. They are struggling with extreme poverty and the very real threat of death. Famine is now a confirmed fact in Gaza City and its surrounding areas. Experts fear it will spread to other parts of the region in the coming month.

A Collective Failure

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the crisis in Gaza as nothing short of a “failure of humanity.” He made an urgent plea to Israel, asking them to allow humanitarian aid into the area without any restrictions. The message was clear: help must reach those who desperately need it.

Strong words also came from Martin Griffiths, a respected figure who once led the UN’s humanitarian efforts. He now directs the Mediation Group International. Griffiths branded the famine declaration as a “heinous crime created by humans.” He sharply criticized Western nations, saying they have been too slow to react to Israel’s actions in Gaza. He raised a tough question for global leaders: How much more evidence is needed before they truly act on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling? That ruling called for a ban on weapon sales to Israel and demanded an investigation into the mass killings.

Children, as always, bear the heaviest burden. Many are severely malnourished. A relief worker living in Gaza City, a parent herself, shared a heartbreaking account. She said many children are facing malnutrition, often going without breakfast. The hunger is so intense that some children feel dizzy throughout the day.

Ongoing Conflict and Denials

The conflict began on October 7, 2023. Since then, Israeli attacks in Gaza have caused at least 62,263 deaths and injured more than 157,365 people. During the same period, Israel has lost 1,139 citizens, with over 200 taken hostage.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, rejected the UN’s findings. They stated that Gaza is “not facing famine.” The ministry claimed that all the UN’s conclusions were merely “Hamas lies.” Adding to the challenge of getting clear information, Israel continues to deny access to international news organizations, including the BBC. This prevents independent journalists from verifying the facts on the ground.
