Britain is sending Royal Air Force fighter jets to join NATO air patrols over Poland. This move will help strengthen the alliance’s eastern defenses. The decision follows recent incidents where Russian drones crossed into Polish and Romanian airspace.

These new aerial operations are set to begin in the coming days. They aim to counter air threats from Russia. This includes drone attacks that have become a growing concern for nations in the region.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced on Friday that the alliance would boost its eastern defenses. This announcement came after a Russian drone entered Polish airspace. It marked the first time NATO had to launch fighter jets to intercept an intruder since the conflict in Ukraine started more than three and a half years ago.

The drone incursions continued. On Saturday, Romania, also a NATO member, reported a drone violating its airspace. Poland likewise scrambled its own fighter jets to respond to fresh air attacks. These attacks occurred just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly condemned Russia’s actions. He called them a direct threat to European security. He also stated that these actions violate international law. Starmer emphasized that British warplanes are not just for show. They play a vital role in preventing aggression. They also protect NATO’s security and Britain’s own national security.

Other NATO allies are joining the effort. France and Germany have confirmed they will send additional fighter jets to support the operations in Poland. Secretary-General Rutte also shared that Denmark will participate.

Britain’s Foreign Ministry has also taken diplomatic action. It summoned the Russian ambassador in London to protest the incidents. The ministry called Russia’s penetration of Polish and NATO airspace a serious and unacceptable violation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a warning. He believes Russia is intentionally increasing its drone attacks. This could further heighten tensions and destabilize European security.
