The UEFA Champions League final is shaking things up. Forget those late-night showdowns we’ve grown used to. The biggest game in European club football will now kick off at 5:00 PM. This is 5 PM, Portugal time, moving away from the traditional 8:00 PM start. UEFA made this announcement today. This change isn’t far off; it begins this very season. That means the grand final set for Budapest in May 2026 will start in the afternoon.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin explained the thinking behind this shift. He made it clear that putting the fans first drove the decision. “With this change, we are putting the experience of the fans at the top of our planning,” Ceferin stated. He pointed out that an 8:00 PM kick-off works well for games played during the week. But for a Saturday final, an earlier start has big upsides for everyone.
An earlier kick-off means the match wraps up sooner. This is true even if it goes to extra time or penalties. Fans will then have more of their Saturday evening free. They can spend it with friends and family. It gives them time to chat about the game of the season. They can soak in the memories without the clock ticking too late into the night. It’s all about making the final more enjoyable for everyone watching.
