The football community is mourning the sudden loss of Shawn Clark, the beloved offensive line coach for the University of Central Florida (UCF) team. Clark passed away unexpectedly at 50 years old, leaving behind a profound legacy both on and off the field.
His death occurred on Sunday, September 21, at an Orlando area hospital. His wife of 17 years, Jonelle Clark, was by his side. Clark had been admitted to the hospital on September 9 after experiencing a medical emergency. While he was in stable condition for a time, his health took an unfortunate turn, leading to his passing.
UCF’s head coach, Scott Frost, shared a heartfelt statement on Sunday. He called Shawn “much more than a coach.” Frost, also 50, emphasized that Clark was “an extraordinary man, husband, and father.” He cared deeply for everyone around him. “The reaction from our players and coaches tells you everything,” Frost added. “It shows Shawn’s true character and the huge impact he had. He was truly well-loved.” Frost extended thoughts and prayers to Jonelle and their children, Giana and Braxton, offering ongoing support.
Earlier this month, when news of Clark’s hospitalization first broke, UCF assured everyone he was “receiving appropriate care.” Head coach Frost even told reporters that Shawn “was doing well” just before his passing. The news came as a shock to many.
Terry Mohajir, UCF’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed deep sadness. “We are heartbroken by Shawn’s passing,” Mohajir stated. “He brought passion, integrity, and a real love for people to everything he did. Shawn will not just be remembered for his football impact. He will be remembered for the relationships he built and the example he set as a husband and father. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and children during this very tough time.”
Shawn and Jonelle were proud parents to two teenagers. Their daughter, Giana, is 16, and their son, Braxton, is also 16. Just last July, Shawn and Jonelle celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. Shawn posted a loving message on Instagram to Jonelle: “Happy anniversary @jonelleclark,” he wrote. “17 years, 6 houses, 2 beautiful kids, can’t imagine life with anyone else!”

Shawn also celebrated his daughter’s Sweet 16 birthday on social media earlier this year, sharing a series of photos from throughout her life. “Happy Sweet 16, little one,” he posted. “We love you.” He did the same for his son, Braxton, marking his 13th birthday on Instagram earlier this year. “Happy 13th Birthday, Braxton!” he shared. “We are so proud of you!”
Clark joined the UCF coaching staff in December 2024. Before that, he spent five successful seasons as the head coach at Appalachian State University, his alma mater. His career was marked by dedication and a genuine connection with his players.
