U.S. Charge d’Affaires Praises Efforts to Fight Corruption and Boost Growth in DR

The Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic, Robert Thomas, considered that continuing the fight against corruption and the strengthening of government institutions will be keys to maintaining confidence in the investment climate in the country.

During his presentation at the traditional Thanksgiving meeting organized each year by the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AmchamDR), Thomas called on the political and business leadership to combat corruption and implement reforms that allow an end to impunity, so that the country can strengthen its economy and establish itself as a leader in the region and an example of democracy.

“We welcome the efforts made by the administration of President Abinader to maintain an attractive, stable and predictable investment climate in the Dominican Republic. Transparency and zero tolerance for corruption are absolutely essential to attract and keep US investors and businesses in the Dominican Republic. We look forward to working closely with the government of President Abinader in pursuit of vital institutional reforms that will not only deter criminal activity and corruption, but will also promote economic prosperity and confidence in the investment climate of the Dominican Republic, ”he said in his presentation “Towards a future together ”.

During his presentation, Thomas highlighted the collaboration between the governments of the United States and the Dominican Republic in matters of security, trade, education, health and development.

The charge d’affaires said that the United States Government has invested US $ 298 million in health in the last 20 years and that in the next year it will work to strengthen, together with the Ministry of Health, epidemiological surveillance at the national and provincial level in order to improve data-driven decision making; train health workers in the care of Covid-19, support vaccination campaigns, among others.

As of January 20, 2021, Robert W. Thomas assumed the position of Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Santo Domingo. He had previously been Minister Counselor to the mission since July 16, 2020, after serving three years as the United States Consul General in Montreal, Canada.

President AmchamDR predicts RD will be investment magnet linked to Nearshoring

The president of the American Chamber of Commerce, Roberto Herrera, predicted that the Dominican Republic has the potential to become a magnet for Nearshoring-related investments in the next ten years.

In his speech at the AmchamDR Thanksgiving event, Herrera highlighted geographic location, political and economic stability as part of the attractions that make the country an important investment destination.

In this regard, the President of AmchamDR referred to the importance of strengthening ties between the country and the United States, in order to take advantage of the great opportunities that arise in the relocation of global value chains to the Americas. Among the advantages of our country to take advantage of the dynamics linked to the fundamental role of the diaspora as a bridge between both nations.

“Those two million Dominicans living, working and studying in the US have a lot to contribute in the stage that is beginning. There are among them true pioneers who succeed in the most varied fields. Pioneers like the ones Amcham recognizes annually ”.

On the other hand, Herrera thanked the private sector for the role it has played in the preservation of jobs and economic recovery in the post-pandemic context, as well as the efforts of the government and international cooperation to develop and distribute vaccines that will mitigate the Covid-19.

Marcelino San Miguel II is exalted as President Emeritus of AmchamDR

During the Thanksgiving luncheon, the American Chamber of Commerce honored Marcelino San Miguel II as President Emeritus, who led the institution in the period 1982-1984 William Malamud, executive vice president of AmchamDR, presented him with a plaque of recognition for his contributions in representing and connecting the entity with a new vision of the future.
