Trump Weighs Pardon for Binance Founder CZ; Return to Leadership Possible

Word from the White House hints at a big change for the crypto world. Reports say former U.S. President Donald Trump is thinking about pardoning Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the founder and former CEO of Binance. This move could open the door for CZ to return to leading the major cryptocurrency exchange, if certain conditions are met.

News organizations are buzzing with the possibility. A pardon would mean CZ could potentially rejoin Binance’s management. However, politicians are watching this idea very carefully. Following the news, the chances of a pardon shot up more than 20% on Kalshi, a platform where people bet on future events.

The chatter started with a report from Fox Business on Friday. Senior correspondent Charles Gasparino shared on X (formerly Twitter) that “discussions inside the White House are getting serious” about a presidential pardon for the crypto executive. Gasparino added that many people close to Trump believe the fraud case against CZ was weak. They felt it didn’t deserve a felony conviction or prison time.

CZ’s Legal Troubles

Back in 2023, Zhao admitted he failed to keep up a strong program against money laundering. This led to a four-month prison sentence. He got out last year after paying a $50 million fine. Binance, the company he founded, agreed to pay a massive $4.3 billion. This was one of the biggest company settlements in U.S. history.

At the time, the Justice Department called the case a “key example” for how to regulate crypto platforms. CZ’s legal team argued that the accusations were about paperwork problems, not intentional fraud. The idea of a presidential pardon now brings up an old question: Should financial crimes in the digital world be treated differently from traditional financial crimes?

A Shift in Crypto Politics?

Gasparino’s sources claim Trump “is thinking about giving him a pardon.” This could pave the way for CZ to return to leading Binance, especially since he’s still the largest shareholder. But the Republican administration is worried about how the public would see such a move. This is especially true given how much Trump’s inner circle is getting involved with digital asset projects.

In recent months, some of Trump’s family members have started projects tied to tokens and digital collectibles. This goes hand-in-hand with his increasingly pro-crypto speeches. Analysts say a pardon could strengthen the idea that the U.S. is becoming more welcoming to cryptocurrencies if Trump wins a second term.

Market and Industry Reaction

After Friday’s report, the odds of CZ getting a pardon jumped by over 20% on the Kalshi prediction platform. This shows how quickly political news can affect market bets.

However, an Axios report reminded everyone that Binance’s current CEO, Richard Teng, had stated CZ’s court agreement included a lifelong ban from holding executive positions at the exchange. If a presidential pardon were to remove this ban, it would be a truly unique event in the world of digital finance. Political insiders note that even the possibility of a pardon shows how much cryptocurrencies now matter in the U.S. presidential agenda.
