A recent U.S. military operation in the southern Caribbean Sea has ended with eleven people dead. President Donald Trump announced that American forces attacked a vessel carrying illegal drugs. He described those killed as “drug terrorists.”
The military action took place on a Tuesday. Trump later shared details on social media. He said the operation targeted members of the “Tren de Aragua” gang. This group originated from Venezuela. The boat was in international waters. It was reportedly heading to the United States with its illicit cargo.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump confirmed the strike. He stated that the U.S. military “fired upon” a drug boat. This vessel was near Venezuela and held a “large amount” of drugs. His direct language left no room for doubt about the incident.
Later, Trump posted a stark warning on his Truth Social platform. He wrote, “This morning, under my orders, the U.S. Military conducted a kinetic strike against Tren de Aragua Drug Terrorists in the SOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility. The strike resulted in 11 terrorist deaths, with no U.S. personnel harmed. Let this be a warning to anyone even thinking of bringing drugs into the United States of America… Be warned!” He also shared a video. It showed a motorboat at sea. The boat then exploded and caught fire.
Growing Tensions with Venezuela
This strike comes amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and Venezuela. The U.S. has significantly increased military and political pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. This includes a substantial $50 million reward. The bounty is for information leading to Maduro’s arrest on drug trafficking charges.
The U.S. government previously labeled two groups as “terrorist organizations.” One was the Tren de Aragua gang. The other was the “Cartel of the Suns.” U.S. officials claim President Maduro leads this second group. These designations add serious legal weight to any actions against them.
Venezuela has reacted strongly to these U.S. moves. President Maduro declared on a Monday that he would “declare the republic in armed state” if the U.S. launched an attack. He called the U.S. troop movements “the greatest threat to our continent in 100 years.” This shows the high stakes involved in the current standoff.
