President Donald Trump delivered a strong message. He stated he would not allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the West Bank. Trump spoke to reporters at the White House. “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank… it will not happen,” he declared. This firm warning came just before Netanyahu was scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump’s clear stance matches a growing global push. Many countries are urging Israel to end its military actions in Gaza. They also want an end to the occupation of the West Bank. Several Western nations have begun officially recognizing a Palestinian state. This move directly counters the wishes of hardline groups in Israel. These groups believe annexing the West Bank would stop the idea of a Palestinian state from moving forward.
Extreme nationalist voices in Netanyahu’s government openly call for taking over the West Bank. This area is part of the Palestinian territories. Both the United Kingdom and Germany have already warned Israel against such a step. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke at the UN headquarters. On Monday, he called any annexation of territory “morally, legally, and politically unacceptable.”
Trump also mentioned ongoing talks. He said he has been speaking with Netanyahu and other leaders in the Middle East. “We are close to an agreement on Gaza and maybe even peace,” Trump suggested. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who was barred by the U.S. from traveling to New York, delivered his speech via video. He expressed readiness to work with world leaders on a peace plan. This plan for Israel and Palestine was introduced by France on Monday.
Abbas thanked many countries that have recently recognized the Palestinian state. This list includes Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Portugal. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, and Denmark followed suit. These recognitions put pressure on the United States. The U.S. continues to oppose recognizing Palestine, stating it would reward Hamas.
Tensions remain high on the ground. Israel has shut down the only road connecting the West Bank and Jordan. This prevents over 2 million Palestinians from traveling outside the area. The border closure happened days after two Israeli soldiers were killed near the crossing. A Jordanian gunman shot them, and he was then killed at the scene.
Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza remains dire. At least 65,419 Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks since October 2023. These operations began after Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023. That attack killed 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 people being taken hostage.
A UN investigation committee also reported troubling findings. They found that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry quickly rejected this report. They called it “completely distorted and false.”
