Dominican tobacco exports reflected unprecedented figures, reaching US$1,236 million in 2021, marking a historical peak in the last 10 years.

The data was offered by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM), an entity that highlighted that the export of this item had a year-on-year growth of 32% and 30% when compared to 2020 and 2019.

This growth is mainly explained by exports of cigars and cigarillos, which went from US$787 million in 2020 to US$1,047 million in 2021, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Customs. Likewise, exports of raw or unprocessed tobacco showed significant growth, going from US$10 million to US$50 million.

With this record in the levels of tobacco exports, indicated the MICM, the Dominican Republic ensures the leading position of this product in the main international markets and as an example, it added that Dominican tobacco exports to the United States and Germany increased by 31% and 44%, respectively.

Free Zone grows 22.7%
In 2021, the value of exports from free zones grew by US$1,316 million, which represents an increase of 22.7% compared to 2020.

According to the National Council of Export Free Zones (CNZFE), the sector’s exports amounted to US$7,143.3 million in 2021, while in 2020 it reached US$5,827.7 million.

“For the first time in the history of the free zones of the Dominican Republic, the threshold of US$7,000 million was exceeded, which constitutes a record figure in the exports of this sector, which in turn represented 60.4% of the total exports of the country. country,” said the executive director of the CNZFE, Daniel Liranzo, citing figures from the General Directorate of Customs.
