The US will invest 9.5 billion dollars to promote green hydrogen

The United States Government announced on Tuesday an investment of 9,500 million dollars to promote the use of green hydrogen in industry, in addition to an initiative for the Administration to prioritize the purchase of non-polluting materials.

As part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan, the Secretary of Energy will invest $8 billion to create regional green hydrogen plants, 1,000 million for electrolysis technology and 500 million for projects to recycle this gas.

"The position of the Administration is that green hydrogen has the potential to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases"explained senior officials on condition of anonymity during a call with journalists.

Green hydrogen is produced from water with the process of electrolysis, which can be carried out using electricity obtained from renewable sources without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphereunlike gray hydrogen, obtained through natural gas.

The US Government also announced the creation of the Working Group for Clean Purchasing, which will be in charge of verifying that the Administration buys those construction materials, such as steel or cement, in whose manufacturing process fewer emissions and pollutants were emitted.

"It is the first time that the federal government has used its purchasing power to promote low-carbon markets", officials stressed, noting that the US Administration is the largest buyer in the world.

They also explained that the United States is working with the European Union (EU) to "to line up" global trade with climate goals.

Last week, the Government announced the launch of its program to install 500,000 chargers for electric cars on the country’s roads, which is also part of Biden’s great infrastructure plan, with which he seeks to create jobs and combat the climate crisis. .
