The Guilty: A cut and paste of the original?

The Guilty, released a few days ago on the streaming platform Netflix, is a remake of the movie Danish of the same name from 2018 Gustav moller. The original film had won sacred awards in several ceremonies such as the Sundance Film Festival 2018 where the Rotterdam International Film Festival. the “The Guilty” version Netflix repeat the same story: an emergency services operator tries to come to the aid of an apparently kidnapped woman but realizes that it is a problem much more serious than that.

It’s in December 2018 than Jake gyllenhaal has announced that it has recovered the rights to the first film which it has announced will be producing and at the same time playing the lead role under the banner of Nine Stories Productions. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (The Seven Mercenaries, Belly Rage, Equalizer 2). Overall, most critics praise an effective film, driven by the enormous performance of Jake gyllenhaal but which does not reach the level of the original film, all the same largely above since it lays all the bases taken again by this American remake.

This is where the central problem of this new The Guilty. It’s a remake that is 100% the original. We have the impression of attending the same film as that of Gustav moller, even if Fuqua and Gyllenhaal try to stimulate a different dynamic (in particular by the narrative addition of this “fire”).

More resources are available, the control room seems much more gargantuan than its Danish counterpart and we feel that The Guilty currency table “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” than the original movie. The voice casting is all the more well served by notable actors like Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough (Under The Silver Lake; The House that Jack Built) or Peter Sasgaard (The Seven Mercenaries, Escobar). But the one who eclipses everyone remains undoubtedly Jake gyllenhaal. The American comedian still delivers a Dantesque interpretation, particularly fine and fair, and clearly stands out as one of the best actors of his generation both this consideration of not limiting only to The Guilty.

Apart from the powerful control of its central actor, The Guilty has nothing else to sell. Yes, the film is well directed, well done, very effective. But we don’t get any surprises, especially if you have already seen Gustav Moller’s Danish film just before.
