The Cy Young, the future

El Cy Young, el futuro

The 2021 Cy Young Award winners have been Robbie Ray, a left-hander from Toronto, and Corbin Burnes, a right-hander of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ray won easily with 29 first-place votes and Gerrit Cole of the Yankees received the remainder. Burnes won tightly in competition with Zack Wheeler of Philadelphia. Both received 12 first-place votes, but Burnes benefited in the second-place votes, 14-9. Max Scherzer of Washington and the Dodgers received 6 first-place votes and there were 30 completed.

Are these gentlemen the future of big league pitching for years to come?

Ray is 30 years old, has been in the major league since 2014, with an overall record of 62-58 and a 4.00 ERA. In 2021 he had a record of 13-7 and 2.84, leading in this last line, in innings with 193.1 and in more strikeouts with 240 (average of 11.5 every 9 innings). He pitched on a $ 8 million contract this year and is in free agency. Who wants it, how does its price go up this Cy Young? He’s likely to be a stellar for the next 5 years, unless injuries get in his way.

The other, Burnes, is younger, only 27 years old and has been in MLB since 2018. In 2021 he was 11-5 and 2.43 with 234 strikeouts in 160 innings in outstanding work. For life he has 23 victories, 11 defeats and 3.39.

But do not pay much attention to that of the victories because the Sabermetrics of the new generation have already decided that this is not of great importance. Therefore, they committed the villainy of not knowing what the Mexican Julio Urías did this year: 20-3 and 2.96, 195 strikeouts in 185 innings.

MVP: In the American League everything turned out normal. Japan’s Shohei Ohtani got 30 first-place votes and won MVP easily. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was placed in second place worldwide, 29 votes. In the National it was suspected that they would give the award to Bryce Harper and this happened, although with some Dominican competition. Harper received 17 of first place and 9 of second, Juan Soto was favored with 6 first and 11 of second and Fernando Tatis Jr. 2 of first and 5 of second. The Dominican protests are on.
