Tension Rises as Fence Erected on Argentina Bolivia Border in Salta

The recent installation of a wired fence on the border between Bolivia and Argentina has sparked concerns and discontent from the Bolivian authorities. The 200-meter fence, located in the province of Salta, aims to curb smuggling and increase controls on the movement of people between the two countries.

Official Statement from Bolivia

The Bolivian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement expressing its discontent with the unilateral measure, emphasizing the need for bilateral dialogue to address border issues. The statement reads: “Border issues must be discussed through bilateral dialogue mechanisms established between the states to find coordinated solutions to issues in common. Any unilateral measure can affect the good neighborhood and peaceful coexistence between brotherly peoples.”

What is the plan?

The measure was taken by the Government of Salta, in coordination with the nation. Bolivia will request “through diplomatic channels the information on this topic to undertake the corresponding actions.”

As reported by All news (TN), a medium allied with Channel 4, the measure is part of the Güemes Plan of the Ministry of Security led by Patricia Bullrich, with the aim of intensifying the controls on the borders of the north. The fence will be installed within the preventive wall used when the Bermejo River grows, and points to those who circulate between the two countries doing so legally, with the corresponding controls. The work will be funded by the province of Salta, with nation supervision.
