The 2026 NFL free agency quarterback carousel just left a 41-year-old Pro Bowler behind. He isn’t staying quiet about it. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco officially re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday. He accepted a one-year contract to back up Joe Burrow. He simultaneously publicly criticized the league for ignoring his viability as a starter.
The new deal guarantees Flacco a $6 million base salary. He can earn up to $9 million through performance incentives. The move keeps him in Cincinnati. The reality of his market value clearly frustrated the former Super Bowl MVP. Teams across the league with glaring vacancies under center opted to throw massive contracts at younger free agents. Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa dominated the market. Flacco was relegated to backup duty.
He didn’t hide his resentment. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday about his offseason experience, Flacco delivered a blunt assessment of the league’s front offices. He believes he deserves to lead a franchise.
“Believe me, I wish I was a guy somewhere,” Flacco said. “And I think teams are dumb for not having me be that guy.”
The veteran acknowledged the conflicting emotions of securing a lucrative roster spot in professional sports while feeling undervalued.
“Not being one of those guys to go sign somewhere, yeah, it pisses me off a little bit,” he added. “But at the same time, I’m very happy to be here.”
Flacco’s grievance is rooted in his unexpected late-career resurgence. The Bengals acquired him in a rare inner-division trade with the Cleveland Browns in 2025. Burrow went down with a turf toe injury. Previous backup Jake Browning had departed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Flacco stepped in. He made six starts.
He threw for 1,664 yards. He tossed 13 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He posted a 61.7% completion rate. He earned his first career Pro Bowl selection.
The individual statistics were elite. The team results were not. Cincinnati went 1-5 during his tenure as the interim starter. That split between personal production and team failure ultimately defined his 2026 market. Front offices looked at his age. They looked at his win-loss record as a starter. They passed. Flacco will now spend the season behind Burrow on the depth chart.
