Portuguese tax authorities are warning citizens about a surge in phishing scams using fake emails and text messages to steal personal and financial data.
The Tax and Customs Authority (AT) issued the alert, noting that fraudsters are impersonating the institution. These fraudulent communications often contain malicious links designed to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information.
The scams, known as “phishing,” aim to obtain personal details or banking credentials from unsuspecting individuals. The AT published the warning on its official Finanças Portal.
The authority emphasized that its legitimate emails always originate from addresses ending in @at.gov.pt. It clarified that the agency never sends emails or SMS messages containing links that request personal or tax data.
The AT also stated it never solicits payments through links sent via email or SMS. All official digital interactions and operations with the AT are conducted solely through its Finanças Portal.
Informational communications are only sent to taxpayers who have explicitly activated email and SMS notifications through their official accounts. Users are advised to always verify that the Finanças Portal address begins with “https://” to ensure a secure connection when accessing the site.
