A busy street in Sydney’s Inner West became a scene of sudden chaos recently. A 60-year-old man opened fire, hurting at least 20 people. Police quickly moved in and arrested the shooter. One person is in serious condition after the incident.
New South Wales police confirmed they caught the man. He had fired between 50 and 100 shots. The bullets hit passing cars and even police officers nearby. The shooting took place on a lively street during the evening hours.
One witness, Joe Azar, works in an office across the road. He first thought the loud noises were just rocks hitting glass or fireworks. Then he saw a car window shatter. A bus stop also broke apart. That’s when he knew it was a real shooting. He said everything happened very fast, leaving little time to react.
After getting the emergency call, many officers rushed to the area. They blocked off the street. They then went into a commercial building near the scene. The man was found in an upstairs room. Officers seized two rifles there.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for injuries. He got these injuries during his arrest. Police have not yet formally charged him.
Police also shared more details about the injured. One man went to the hospital on his own after being shot. He is now in serious condition. The other 19 people had injuries from flying glass or metal pieces. Many of these victims also needed hospital care.
Investigators are still working to understand why the man did this. They are also checking the weapons and bullets used. For now, they have not found any links to terrorism or organized crime.
