Sunita Ahuja, wife of veteran actor Govinda, recently offered a sharp critique of his reliance on astrology and expensive rituals. Her comments came during an appearance on Paras Chhabra’s podcast.
Ahuja revealed that Govinda frequently spends significant sums, often amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, on various religious ceremonies. These rituals are reportedly suggested by his well-wishers and astrologers.
She openly disagreed with his approach. Ahuja emphasized her belief that externally performed rituals are ineffective.
“Our house also has someone like this, Govinda,” Ahuja stated on the podcast. She described his tendency to engage in costly practices, citing instances like, “‘Do this prayer, give two thousand four hundred dollars. Do that prayer.'”
She firmly believes in personal devotion. “I say, ‘Do the prayers yourself. Prayers performed by others don’t work,'” she added.
Ahuja further elaborated on her philosophy. She argued that God accepts what an individual does personally.
She expressed skepticism about high-cost ceremonies, such as “these two thousand four hundred dollar prayers, those twelve thousand dollar prayers.” Ahuja believes personal worship is more valuable.
“It’s better to wake up in the morning and do your own prayers,” she advised. Ahuja personally practices self-performed rituals and handles her own charitable donations.
Her remarks were prompted by Chhabra’s own anecdote. Chhabra shared how he once felt anxious and considered consulting an astrologer, but lacked the funds.
Ahuja concluded that she does not trust in spending substantial money for others to perform religious acts. She indicated that those who are “afraid” often fall prey to such practices.
