Spanish football clubs have initiated a coordinated protest against La Liga’s controversial plans to stage league matches abroad, beginning with a silent demonstration and sparking allegations of broadcast censorship.
Players from Real Oviedo and Espanyol remained motionless for approximately 30 seconds after kickoff in their match on Thursday, signaling their opposition to the league’s strategy. The protest specifically targets a proposed Villarreal-Barcelona game slated for Miami, United States.
Other clubs across Spain’s top professional football league are expected to adopt similar on-field protests during upcoming matches this weekend.
During the silent demonstration in Oviedo, television broadcasts notably avoided showing the players on the field. Instead, the coverage shifted to aerial views of the stadium before returning to live action only once play had commenced.
Social media users quickly highlighted the lack of direct broadcast coverage of the protest. One user, Polymarket FC, posted: “SCANDAL! Real Oviedo and Espanyol players decided not to play for the first 30 seconds of the game today as a sign of protest against the Villarreal vs. Barcelona game being played in Miami… La Liga decided NOT to broadcast those moments of the match.”

Another user, Mr. AsubÃo, echoed the sentiment, alleging “Censorship in @LaLiga by Javier Tebas and THE CLUBS THAT VOTE for him every 4 years,” linking it to alleged “misinformation” surrounding the Miami match conditions.

The Oviedo-Espanyol fixture, which Espanyol won 2-0, marked the return of league play after an international break.
