klarna has carried out a study to explore Christmas trends on a global scale and reveals the new savings and sustainability habits of Spaniards.

Traditions and decoration

Christmas is a time of year to spend time with loved ones, enjoy feasts and gifts, and marvel at the festive decorations.

86% of Spaniards will decorate their homes this year and 8 out of 10 will wait until December to do so.

Among all the countries surveyed, Italians (43%), Spanish (42%) and Portuguese (41%) are the ones that most favor the classic Nativity scene when decorating their homes, although the Christmas tree (90% ) and ornaments (60%) are the most popular elements on these dates.

Despite having a less ecological reputation than their Nordic neighbours, the countries of southern Europe are the ones that reuse their Christmas decorations the most year after year. In Spain, 3 out of 4 respondents opt for a plastic fir tree that they keep once the holidays are over. Likewise, 1 in 3 indicate that they will not buy any ornaments this year, preferring to recycle those that they already have.

Saving is also a central theme in Christmas decorations, and more so this year. That is why 1 in 4 Spaniards will use fewer bright decorations inside the house and 1 in 4 give up this type of ornament to decorate their facades or gardens.

Gifts

Despite the current economic context, 89% of Spaniards plan to buy gifts this year. They are only surpassed by the Norwegians (92%) and the Irish (90%) in this eagerness to surprise their loved ones.

However, most buyers will try to be more saver than last year. 86% have set themselves the goal of being more attentive to prices and discounts when buying gifts. That is why 51% of Spaniards have brought their Christmas purchases forward to November in order to take advantage of the Black Friday offers. 40% will wait until December in the hope of also being able to enjoy a discount and 39% of Spaniards will trust shopping apps like Klarna to save on their Christmas purchases.

The sustainability and the solidarity They also play a fundamental role on these dates: 35% of Spaniards will donate objects or clothes that they no longer use, 24% will sell them to finance part of their gifts and 18% will opt for second-hand gifts for their friends and family. . 42% of baby boomers will also reuse wrapping paper.
