An unexpected blast at an artillery unit has left ten soldiers injured. The incident happened during a training exercise in the city of Paju, located in the northwest region. All the injured personnel were taken to hospitals.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday, September 10, at about 3:24 PM local time. Five non-commissioned officers were among those hurt. Their injuries included burns to their arms, thighs, and hands. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Investigators are now trying to figure out what went wrong. The explosion involved a simulated round. These rounds are designed to create sound and smoke effects, mimicking live ammunition without the actual danger. However, this particular round unexpectedly detonated during the blank-fire artillery drill.
Military police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. The Yonhap News Agency reported these details on Thursday, September 11.
