South Korea Repatriates 64 Citizens from Cambodia Amid Online Scam Probe

South Korea has repatriated 64 of its citizens from Cambodia, many of whom were reportedly entangled in a sprawling transnational cybercrime industry that often blurs the lines between willing participants and coerced victims.

A chartered plane brought the South Koreans to Incheon International Airport this past Saturday, following discussions between a special South Korean team and Cambodian authorities that had traveled to the country on Wednesday. The group stands accused of involvement in various online scam operations.

South Korean National Security Advisor Wi Seong-lac previously stated that the repatriated individuals include both those who collaborated with the criminal networks and others forced to work under duress, facing threats or violence. An estimated 1,000 South Koreans are believed to be part of the more than 200,000 people operating within these illicit networks in Cambodia.

These sophisticated operations often lure individuals with fake job offers. Upon arrival, their passports are seized, and they are compelled to engage in scams. These include “Pig-Butchering” crypto investment frauds, international call center scams, and illegal online gambling.

Cybercrime experts note Cambodia has rapidly emerged as a multi-billion dollar hub for such activities in recent years. These networks exploit both foreign nationals and local residents.

Touch Sokhak, a spokesperson for Cambodia’s Interior Ministry, highlighted the repatriation as a result of strong cooperation between the two nations in combating online fraud.
